Hardwood care & maintenance

Routine hardwood cleaning

Let your floor’s natural beauty shine through. Keep your floor looking like new with these simple care tips.

Use a soft cloth to blot spills and spots as soon as they happen. Never let liquids to stand on hardwood. Only clean the using manufacturer-recommended cleaning products. Don't use oil, wax, polish, or ammonia, which can dull your floor’s finish. You should also steer clear of steel wool, scouring powders, or other abrasive cleaners, which can scratch or damage your floor’s finish. Don't wash or wet-mop with soap, water, detergent, or any other liquid cleaner. This could cause swelling or warping and may void the warranty. Don't use any type of buffing machine.

Sweep, dust, or vacuum regularly. If vacuuming, use a hard floor attachment to avoid scratching or dulling your floor’s finish.

Preventative hardwood floor care

Use entry mats to help collect dirt and other substances that can be tracked onto your hardwood. Prevent slipping with a rug pad. Don’t use rubber- or foam-backed mats, as they may discolor your floors. Use floor protectors to minimize indentations and scratches from heavy objects. The heavier the object, the wider the floor protector should be.

Maintain a normal indoor relative humidity level between 35% and 55% throughout the year to minimize the natural expansion and contraction of wood. During the dry season, we recommend using a humidifier to prevent excess shrinkage. During the wet season, use an air conditioner or dehumidifier to maintain humidity during the summer months. Avoid excessive exposure to water during rain, snow or other inclement weather.

Remove shoes with spikes or heels before walking on your hardwood floor, as they can leave scratches or indentations. Trim pets’ nails regularly. Rearrange rugs & furniture periodically to allow floors to age evenly. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, which can discolor hardwood and accelerate the aging of wood. Never try to slide or roll heavy objects across your hardwood floor.
